The six-story Rakennuskonepaja factory building in Vallila’s industrial area was originally completed in 1939. The building complex has undergone several expansions and renovations, including an expansion in 1945 and a new office wing added in 2000. Over the years, the building has housed the administrative office of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), the Radiation Biology Laboratory, the Military Medical Archives of the Accident Investigation Bureau, and the Academy of Fine Arts.

The building and its surroundings hold a distinguished place in Helsinki’s urban fabric. The area is noted in the 2016 Helsinki General Plan for its cultural, historical, architectural and landscape significance.  In 2000, the Helsinki City Museum recommended the Rakennuskonepaja building for preservation, citing its significant contribution to the cityscape.

The building complex will be refurbished to house a collection of dynamic, multi-purpose workspaces to meet the needs of modern working life. The original 1939 section of the complex now has a renovated entrance hall, conference center, wellness spaces, and other shared social spaces for the building tenants.  A showroom has also been added to demonstrate interior design solutions for potential office tenants. The refurbishment of the complex is an on-going, phased process in continued development with aDT.
